Trunktober: Train To Busan

TrainToBusanFeature

This October we’re focused on one thing and one thing only… watching as much horror-related programming as possible to prime the pop culture pump in celebration of Halloween. Our consuming will be taking place nightly, and while there’s no rhyme or reason to how we’re going about choosing our scary screenings, we’ll do our best to tell you how we did it so that you can watch them as well.

Title: Train To Busan

Directed By: Sang-ho Yeon

Starring: Yoo Gong, Yu-mi Jung, Dong-seok Ma, Su-an Kim

We Watched On: Netflix

Trunktober Approved Because: For those who don’t mind subtitles, this zombie flick from South Korea is a wild ride, though admittedly not quite as wild as those the fictional characters from the film are forced to take as passengers on a besieged train from Seoul to Busan. We don’t blame you if you feel burned out on anything related to the undead, but this movie has something that so many others in the genre do not… heart. (Probably because zombies are more focused on brains.)

Biggest Scare: There aren’t a lot of jump scares to lift you out of your seat, but the sense of impending doom is enough to make you uneasy for the duration of the film, particularly for those watching who are parents and would have to traverse the undead landscape with kids in tow.

Butch Walker

ButchWalkerLastDaysOfSummerTour3

Artist: Butch Walker

Tour: The Last Days Of Summer Tour

City Attended: Boston, MA

Venue: Royale

Concert Date: 09-22-18

Opening Act: Greg Holden

The Reason We Went: A phoenix within the music industry, Walker has risen from the ashes numerous times, allowing the machine to chew him up but never spit him out. He has reinvented himself and his sound over the course of his career while never losing the connection to his fans or what has made him such a compelling songwriter and producer.

What We Thought: An early show due to the venue transforming into a dance club at 10:00 PM, the headliner took the stage while many in the city were still sitting down for dinner. The Georgia native poked fun at the ungodly anti-rock hour, routinely making tongue-in-cheek suggestions that midnight was soon upon us and that we should buckle in for a long set because he and his band were playing until they kicked us all out.

Walker delivered on his promise, churning out and energetic set that was breakneck at times, visiting the charismatic singer’s back catalog that included songs from his most recent album “Stay Gold,” as well as fan favorite past recordings like “The Spade” and “Sycamore Meadows.”

Show Highlight: With the clock ticking down and the dancers banging on the doors, Walker surprised the crowd with his second encore by appearing in the audience with his acoustic guitar in hand. He climbed onto a table in the sea of people and began an intimate set that included personal stories, which culminated in a singalong that the entire venue contributed to.

Closing With The Opening: Holden’s voice, which could carry across the city even without the microphone supporting it, captivated the crowd, especially when he gave a stripped down and memorable performance of his song “Boys In The Streets.”

And that’s why we’re giving it…

The Nun

TheNun_TrunkStubs

Title: The Nun

Rated: R

Genre: Suspense, Thriller, Horror, Drama

Release Date: September 7th, 2018

Run Time: 1 hour 36 minutes

Directed By: Corin Hardy

Starring: Taissa Farmiga, Demián Bichir, Jonas Bloquet, Bonnie Aarons, Ingrid Bisu

Reason We’re Watching It: If you’re a fan of “The Conjuring” franchise, you know that one of the most terrifying characters that has appeared briefly in the previous installments is the demonic nun character, so naturally we were ready to get terrified and celebrate October a little early.

What It’s All About: The story is an origin story but definitely not of the superhero variety! A priest with a haunted history and a young nun in training are summoned by the Vatican to investigate the death of a nun in Romania.

Whoah! Rewind That!: The scares were all great and horrifying to say the very least. One scene delivered on suspense and thrills when a man must walk through a slew of undead nuns that are wearing bloody bags over their heads. This scene was very reminiscent of the creepy nurse seen from “Silent Hill.” You know the one!

Watercooler-Worthy Tidbit: Vera Farmiga, who played Lorraine Warren in “The Conjuring” series, is the older sister of Taissa Farmiga, who stars in “The Nun” and is known for her roles on “American Horror Story.”

And that’s why we’re giving it… (4 buckets)

Uncharted (Fan Film)

Uncharted_TrunkStubs

YouTube Fan Film: Uncharted

Rated: NR

Genre: Comedy, Action, Video Game

Release Date: July 16th, 2018

Run Time: 15 minutes

Starring: Nathan Fillion, Stephen Lang, Geno Segers, Mircea Monroe, Ernie Reyes Jr

Director: Allan Ungar

Reason We’re Watching It: It’s no secret we’re gaming fans here at TrunkSpace. (See the Trunk Gaming section to verity our credentials!) Fans of the Uncharted gaming franchise have been wishing for a live action movie for years, but it appears to be stuck in Hollywood pre-production purgatory. Allan Ungar, a fan of the gaming series, took this short film on as a passion project along with Nathan Fillion, and we are so glad they did.

What It’s About: Nathan Drake, played masterfully by Fillion, is captured on purpose in the hopes of retrieving some historical documents from some very bad dudes. Of course, Sully is nearby to help pull Drake’s bacon out of the fire if things go sideways, which you know they always do.

Whoah! Rewind That!: During Drake’s big action scene, Ungar captured the exact way we would see the scene in video game format, and it came out so well that it brought a pixelated tear to our eyes.

Watercooler-Worthy Tidbit: Ungar is not the only one who thinks Fillion is the perfect casting for Drake. There are scads of petitions online from fans asking that they cast Nathan Fillion as the quick quipping Drake.

And that’s why we’re giving it…

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

JurassicWorldFallenKingdom_TrunkStubs

Movie: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Rated: PG-13

Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Adventure

Release Date: June 22, 2018

Run Time: 2 hours 8 minutes

Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rafe Spall, Justice Smith, Daniella Pineda, Jeff Goldblum

Director: J.A. Bayona

Reason We’re Watching It: Dinosaurs! We LOVE dinosaurs, and this installment of the franchise does not disappoint in that aspect. You get to see all of the classic dinos you know and love, and the movie plays out like a greatest hits album with all of your favorite moments from the Jurassic Park series all rolled into one Cretaceous clip show.

What It’s About: Three years after the events that took place in the Jurassic World theme park, all life on the island is threatened by a massive volcanic eruption that will wipe out every living thing. Owen Grady (Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Howard) return to the island with a team in the hopes of extracting as many dinosaurs as possible. What could go wrong? Well, pretty much everything!

Whoah! Rewind That!: Much like Jack-Jack stole the show in “Incredibles 2,” another young star had a “breakthrough role” in “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” A young Pachycephalosaurus was a much-needed comedy relief and played an important part in helping out Owen and Claire.

Watercooler-Worthy Tidbit: It’s been 21 years since Jeff Goldblum was in a “Jurassic Park” movie and 25 years since he first took on Dr. Ian Malcolm in the original “Jurassic Park.” Be warned, though, his role is more of a cameo, but it’s still great to see him back in the franchise.

And that’s why we’re giving it…

Tremors: A Cold Day In Hell

Tremors_TrunkStubs

Title: Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell

Rated: PG-13

Genre: Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

Release Date: May 1, 2018

Run Time: 1 hour 38 minutes

Directed By: Don Michael Paul

Starring: Michael Gross, Jamie Kennedy, Jame-Lee Money

Reason We’re Watching It: Our love for the “Tremors” franchise goes WAY back to the Kevin Bacon days. Michael Gross has been along for the ride since the original movie, portraying his gun-toting, tax-hating character, Burt Gummer. You have to love his take-no-crap persona in the fight against the Graboids and Ass Blasters. Jamie Kennedy was added to the cast in “Tremors 5: Bloodline” as Burt’s son, Travis. The two have very different styles that make for a comedic buddy duo worth watching. You know that you’re going to laugh, cringe and cheer when you put on a “Tremors” flick, and as such, “A Cold Day in Hell” does not disappoint.

What It’s About: Burt and Travis set out on an arctic quest to battle a new outbreak of Graboids and Ass Blasters. When Burt is sidelined by Graboid venom, Travis has to step up to the plate and take charge to help save his dad by extracting venom from a live Graboid. If you’ve ever seen a “Tremors” movie, you know that this is an impossible task. One-liners, viscera and bullets ensue in this chilling addition to the franchise.

Whoah! Rewind That!: Every fight scene in this film is worth watching a few times, but the scene that graboided us by the seat of our movie-going pants was when Travis had to dive headfirst into a Graboid to try and milk venom from the monstrous grub.

Watercooler-Worthy Tidbit: Want more “Tremors” insight to share with your Graboid-loving friends? Check out our exclusive interview with Gross here!

A Quiet Place

AQuietPlace_TrunkStubs

Title: A Quiet Place

Rated: PG-13

Genre: Suspense, Thriller, Horror, Drama

Release Date: April 6, 2018

Run Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Directed By: John Krasinski

Starring: Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe

Reason We’re Watching It: We loved the concept behind “A Quiet Place.” In a sea of movie reboots, this film is a breath of fresh creativity. The idea of silence being a big part of the movie peaked our interest. It’s actually a totally different moviegoing experience, and we’re happy to say our audience was well-behaved and quietly waiting on the edge of their seats.

What It’s About: Creatures that possess a keen sense of hearing have ravaged the human race. A family lives in solitude and silence on a farm while being stalked by these menacing beasts. While “A Quiet Place” is a suspenseful horror movie, there is actually a much deeper story of family and the difficult relationships their situation has forced upon them.

Whoah! Rewind That!: Lee (Krasinski) is away from the farm teaching his son, Marcus (Jupe) how they fish for food and navigate the terrain to keep from making a sound. Meanwhile Lee’s wife, Evelyn (Blunt), goes into labor while the creatures descend on their house. No spoilers, but what follows is one of the most intense, nail-biting moments we have seen in a movie in quite some time.

Watercooler-Worthy Tidbit: Krasinski not only starred in “A Quiet Place,” he also directed the film. Krasinski’s wife, Blunt, played his wife in the movie as well.

And that’s why we’re giving it…

The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale

JoelMcHaleShow_TrunkStubs

Series: The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale

Where To Watch: Netflix

Starring: Joel McHale, Paul Feig, Brad Stevens

Reason We’re Watching It: If you’re like us, you were sad to see the day when E! drained the broth on “The Soup.” Joel McHale’s weekly look at pop culture in all of its hilarity was a bright beacon of laughter at the end of a long work week. Well, our entertainment prayers have finally been answered thanks to Netflix! McHale is back with a weekly show on the streaming service that is pretty much just like “The Soup” but perhaps with a wider spectrum of material to mine for comedy gold.

What It’s About: McHale takes a look at the week in pop culture and delivers a comedic take on reality shows, news programs, scripted TV series and more. You can pretty much guarantee there will be a celebrity guest or two on each show, especially if they’re also involved with a Netflix show they are looking to plug.

Whoah! Rewind That!: In Episode 6 of the first season, McHale had Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant on the show for a guest spot that had us cracking up. There was a great play on words using the movies that Olyphant and Barrymore had been in that you just have to watch to appreciate. It might make you… “Scream 2.” (See, scream as well.)

Watercooler-Worthy Tidbit: An interesting side note, McHale is also on the Netflix series “Santa Clarita Diet” playing a rival real estate agent opposite Olyphant, whose character’s name just so happens to be Joel.

Santa Clarita Diet

SantaClaritaDiet_TrunkStubs

Series: Santa Clarita Diet

Where To Watch: Netflix

Starring: Drew Barrymore, Timothy Olyphant, Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo

Creators: Victor Fresco

Reason We’re Watching It: Any series that can successfully take a horror story and put a comedic spin on it is always worth checking out in our books. “Santa Clarita Diet” is not just a zombie comedy. It’s really, at its core, a story about family and neighbors… and how to literally survive your relationship with the undead.

What It’s About: Sheila (Barrymore) and Joel (Olyphant) are two real estate agents living that perfect suburban life where the biggest worry is trying to come up with an excuse to NOT have dinner with the annoying neighbors. They soon gain a new perspective on things, though, when Sheila takes a turn for the undead. Now the couple and their daughter have to figure out how to keep the family together and keep Sheila fed so that she doesn’t eat those same pesky neighbors.

Whoah! Rewind That!: **SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN SEASON 2** This series is so great that each episode really has its own moment that you’re going to want to play over and over again. For us, a memorable one that had us both cringing and laughing hysterically is when Joel and Sheila invite Nazis to their storage locker in order to kill them for Sheila’s next meal. They reason that Nazis are bad people, and they shouldn’t feel bad for killing bad people, so…

Looks like they are still a loving family after all!

Watercooler-Worthy Tidbit: Drew Barrymore was about to leave acting to focus solely on business and spending more time with her family, but when she got the script for “Santa Clarita Diet” she could not pass it up.

And that’s why we’re giving it…

Everything Sucks!

EverythingSucks_TS

Series: Everything Sucks!

Where To Watch: Netflix

Starring: Jahi Di’Allo Winston, Peyton Kennedy, Patch Darragh, Claudine Mboligikpelani Nako, Quinn Liebling, Elijah Stevenson, Rio Mangini, Sydney Sweeney

Creators: Ben York, Michael Mohan

Reason We’re Watching It: Not to pop culturally carbon date some of our staff, but some (if not all) may have worn Dr. Martens and flannel while listening to Oasis and Pearl Jam during art class in high school. “Everything Sucks!” takes a retrospective look at what it’s like to be an awkward, creative teen while attending high school circa 1990-something. It’s a comedy full of heart, not only from the perspective of the students, but the parents as well. You’ll be laughing one minute and fighting back tears of happiness the next.

What It’s About: The show is a teenage dramady set in the ‘90s. It’s a tale of not fitting in, first loves, new loves, creativity and trying to find your place in life during those awkward high school years. The series focuses much of its attention on Luke (Winston) as he tries to woo Kate (Kennedy), the principal’s daughter. Meanwhile their parents find a mutual affection for one another and bond over past experiences and life as single parents.

Whoah! Rewind That!: There is a scene where Luke recreates all of the iconic ‘90s music videos and syncs it to “Wonder Wall” by Oasis. This is all done in a creative, heartfelt attempt at asking Kate to be his girlfriend.

Watercooler-Worthy Tidbit: The scene that takes place at a Blockbuster video store was shot at only one of 10 remaining brick and mortar stores still in operation. Unfortunately, it closed at the end of 2017. R.I.P. Blockbsuter. We will always be kind and rewind!

And that’s why we’re giving it…
